What might be called a ‘piss stop’
I was surprised to read in the news earlier this week…SHOCK has been expressed across the political spectrum after an act of ‘descecration’ against the holy well at St Aidan’s Church in Bellarena.Parishioners were horrified when they heard that three young men had been seen urinating into the well on the evening of July 9. It appears to have been a very deliberate attack by vandals. The well is used by many people who drink from it for religious purposes.
The police have been informed and are looking for the men who did this. The report went on…
“The water quality is monitored by Limavady Borough Council because so many people drink from it.”Things are back to normal at the well now. Fr O’Hagan said: “We let parishioners know about the incident in the weekly bulletin. Now we can go back to them and tell them that everything is alright again. “Hopefully who ever did this will now realise that they were seen and that might put them off doing it again.”
What I’d like to know is how the Council define the water quality in a ‘holy well’. Is it on the results of how many people have been healed by drinking the water. Does anybody really believe there are healing powers in holy wells? Is there any scientific proof ?
Also, to finish off, is there a lack of public toilet facilities in the Magilligan area?
